Understanding the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)

April 15, 2024

As Canadians, we are fortunate to have access to a robust healthcare system that includes coverage for a wide range of medical needs. However, dental care has traditionally been an area where coverage has been limited, leaving many individuals and families with significant out-of-pocket expenses. To address this gap, various dental care plans have been established across Canada to help individuals afford necessary dental treatments and services.

In this blog, we will explore the Canadian Dental Care Plan, its features, coverage of certain services, and how it benefits Canadians in maintaining optimal oral health.

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP):

  1. Overview of the Canadian Dental Care Plan: The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) aims to help cover the costs of various oral health care services and reduce financial barriers to accessing care for eligible Canadian residents who do not have access to dental coverage. This plan starts in May 2024. The Ontario Dental Benefit Grid has its own fee guide, which we here at Midland Avenue Dental will accept. The plan is paid through Sunlife. Should you have any questions, please contact the Sun Life Contact Centre at 1-888-888-8110.
  2. Features of the Canadian Dental Care Plan: Services that are covered are: 4 units of scaling per year, x-rays, exams, fillings, root canal, crowns (4 in any 120 months), dentures, N20 (laughing gas), and denture relines and repairs. Some of these dental services may require a predetermination (which we here at Midland Avenue Dental will send on your behalf)
  3. Benefits of Having a Dental Plan such as CDCP: a. Financial Protection: Dental care can be expensive, and having a dental care plan helps individuals and families budget for routine care and unexpected dental issues without incurring significant out-of-pocket expenses. b. Improved Access to Care: With a dental care plan, individuals are more likely to seek regular preventive care, which can help prevent more serious dental problems down the line. c. Better Oral Health Outcomes: By providing coverage for a range of dental treatments, dental care plans support individuals in maintaining optimal oral health, which is closely linked to overall health and well-being.
  4. How to Apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan: Simply apply on the CRA website. You may apply on the date that corresponds with your age.
